Gregor Gysi does not wish to run for leadership of Party of the European Left

09/07/2019 (Agence Europe)The German Gregor Gysi announced to the Executive Committee in Berlin on Sunday 7 July that he did not want to run for re-election as leader of the Party of the European Left, “to leave the hand to the next generation”. Gregor Gysi, a leading figure in Germany of the radical left-wing Die Linke party, was head of the PEL for three years. The President said that the results of the European elections were a warning to the radical left in Europe, which needs to rethink itself, especially as regards the link between environmental and social sustainability. A European Progressives Forum, like the one in Bilbao last year (see EUROPE 12107/12), is scheduled to take place in Brussels from 8 to 10 November. Finally, the PEL congress, scheduled for 13-15 December in Malaga, will be the opportunity to elect the future president. (PH)
