Slovak Christian Democratic movement fears irregularities in European elections due to 'Brexit'

01/07/2019 (Agence Europe)Miriam Lexmann, elected to the European Parliament of the Slovak Christian Democratic Movement KDH (EPP), contests the results of the European elections in Slovakia in a statement published on Monday 1 July. The MEP believes that the KDH should have won 2 seats in the European Parliament, since other parties with fewer votes received 2 seats. The KDH referred the matter to the Slovak Constitutional Court, which dismissed the appeal, the statement said, judging the institution to be "dysfunctional" and under the influence of the ruling social-democratic SMER government party. For the Slovak MEP, the Slovak Constitutional Court is "unable to guarantee constitutional rights". "I hope that the European institutions and the European Parliament will take immediate measures to revert this decision". The problem is said to be due to the change in the Slovak electoral law due to 'Brexit'. Slovakia is expected to receive one more seat once Brexit is completed, the statement said. (PH)
