24/06/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 21 June, the European Banking Federation (EBF) welcomed the opinion of the European Banking Authority (EBA) delivered on the same day (see EUROPE 12280/10) on the implementation of regulatory technical standards (RTS) on strong customer authentication under the revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2), applicable in September 2019. Indeed, the EBA has accepted that the competent national authorities may decide to grant an additional limited period of time to certain payment service providers. “A successful implementation of the strong customer authentication requirements for online card payments in Europe can only happen effectively once the entire payments ecosystem, including service providers, banks as well as retailers and merchants, is ready”, the EFB stressed. The organisation had written to the EBA and the European Commission in early June to express its concerns. (MF)
