On 21 June, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) welcomed the Declaration on the Future of Work, adopted on the same day as the centenary of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
In particular, trade unions welcome the fact that the Declaration, supported by governments, employers and trade unions from 187 States, recognises the role of social dialogue and tripartism, emphasizes the importance of setting an “adequate” minimum wage and maximum working time, as well as stressing the need to guarantee universal access to social protection.
“The International Labour Organization is needed now more than ever before”, said Luca Visentini, General Secretary of ETUC, who is concerned about the growing phenomenon of the working poor, especially in Europe. For the union, the ILO must help to counter the undesirable phenomena of globalisation, deregulation, digitisation, as well as climate change.
