24/06/2019 (Agence Europe) – The EU delegation and the US Embassy in Georgia called for calm on 21 June in a joint statement. Demonstrations have been ongoing since Thursday to protest against the intervention of a Russian member of the Georgian Parliament and, more generally, against Russia and the government. “We urge all parties to remain calm, exercise restraint and act within the framework of the Constitution at all times”, the EU and the United States stressed. They indicated that they were closely monitoring ongoing events. On Monday 24, the leader of the ruling party in Georgia, Bidzina Ivanishvili, promised to respond to one of the demonstrators' demands with electoral reform, in order to ensure that the next parliamentary elections in 2020 would be held by proportional representation.
