18/06/2019 (Agence Europe) – The EU Council adopted on Tuesday 18 June a draft directive to grant European travellers emergency travel documents in non-Member States where they do not have a consular representation and would have to go to the consulate or embassy of another Member State in the event of the loss or theft of their documents. The Directive enhances security and modernises the format of these emergency documents. This emergency document will be valid for the time of return to the Member State of origin or, exceptionally, to another destination. The requested Member State must contact the Member State of origin to verify the identity and nationality of the person who presented himself/herself to it. The Commission presented these rules in 2018 (see EUROPE 12031/11), and the European Parliament was consulted (see EUROPE B12174112). (SP)
