22/05/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission confirmed on Wednesday 22 May that it carried out unannounced inspections at the premises of French food retail companies on 20 May. It was the French newspaper Le Figaro that revealed that visits had taken place on the property of the companies Casino and Intermarché. These inspections were carried out because of the institution's concerns that the companies may have violated the rules of EU law, which prohibits cartels and restrictive business practices. The Commission points out that the heads of its departments were accompanied by inspectors from the French competition authority. However, these inspections do not mean that the companies have actually violated EU law. The investigation will therefore continue. (LT)
