21/05/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 21 May, the Council of the European Union adopted two decisions reducing the membership of the Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) from 350 to 329 members, subject to an effective withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU (see EUROPE 12148/23). Estonia, Cyprus and Luxembourg will have one additional seat in each committee, as they had lost one after Croatia's accession to the EU. The remaining 21 vacant seats will be kept in reserve for possible future enlargements. The new rules will apply from the beginning of each committee's new five-year term of office (26 January 2020 for the CoR and 21 September 2020 for the EESC) or when Brexit becomes effective.
