The WindEurope organisation, which calls on voters to vote next week in the European elections, fears, in a statement published on Friday 17 May, a future European Parliament that would perhaps be less favourable to renewable energies.
Giles Dickson, CEO of WindEurope, recalled that the outgoing European Parliament was a “key enabler of wind energy”, fighting in particular for a 32% renewable energy target for 2030 (the European Commission and Member States initially wanted a 27% target).
“Unfortunately the next European Parliament may be less friendly to renewables... Populist parties are gaining support. They are much less committed to fighting climate change than most mainstream parties”, says Giles Dickson. According to him, these populist parties are also rather sceptical about renewable energies. The number of seats won by these populist parties will depend mainly on the turnout in the elections, he estimates. Hence the campaign launched by WindEurope to encourage citizens to vote.
