Following the violent tropical Cyclone Kenneth and the floods that devastated northern Mozambique (Cabo Delgado province) and the Comoros (Greater Comoros), the European Commission immediately mobilised initial emergency humanitarian aid worth 1.5 million euros on the evening of 26 April, the institution announced. This deadly disaster affected Mozambique, which had already been hit hard six weeks earlier by Cyclone Idai (see EUROPE 12238/9, 12232/22).
"Mozambique is facing a double disaster. The EU is acting fast to deliver essential supplies, especially given that Mozambique is still recovering from cyclone Idai", commented Christos Stylianides, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, in a statement. And to express the EU's solidarity with the people of Mozambique and Comoros.
The aid, provided from ECHO's (the Commission's Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations) budget, will finance food, emergency shelter, access to drinking water and sanitation facilities, basic essential items and emergency telecommunications support for the victims.
Wind speed of more than 200 km/hour and heavy rains killed 38 people, destroyed many villages (some 35,000 homes are destroyed or damaged), caused extensive damage to infrastructure and crops, and people are threatened by flash floods. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
