24/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission asked on Wednesday 24 April for some time to study the new controversial measures adopted that morning by the Romanian Parliament. While Bucharest has received several warnings from the European institution on the issue of respect for the rule of law, Romanian parliamentarians have approved amendments to the Criminal Code that could hinder the fight against corruption. These measures include a reduction in the limitation period for corruption offences, lighter penalties for abuse of power and the reclassification of criminal negligence, which was previously a crime. The reformed Criminal Code also prevents prosecutors from offering informants reduced sentences or immunity. In addition, the Romanian media will no longer be allowed to report that personalities and political leaders have been accused of corruption. (SP)
