24/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – The EEAS spokesperson reminded Egypt of its regional and international commitments to the rule of law on Wednesday 24 April, after 88% of constitutional amendments were approved by referendum. In particular, these amendments increase the presidential term from 4 to 6 years, strengthen executive control of the judiciary and institutionalise the political role of the army. “In light of the referendum process and its content, the European Union recalls Egypt’s international and regional commitments with respect to the rule of law and an independent judiciary, freedom of assembly and expression, and the rights of participation of its citizens and expects Egypt to fully adhere to these commitments”, the spokesperson stressed in a statement. Businessmen and majority parties reportedly offered basic necessities to the poorest voters. (CG)
