24/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – The EEAS spokesperson condemned on Wednesday 24 April the simultaneous execution, the day before, of 37 people, mainly from the Shia minority, in several Saudi Arabian cities for “terrorism”. This is the highest number of executions in a single day in the country since 2016, and “confirms a negative trend”, the spokesperson said in a statement. “These mass executions raise serious doubts about the respect of the right to fair trial, which is a fundamental international minimum standard of justice”, she said, also considering that the execution of minors at the time of the alleged acts constituted another serious violation. “The identity of the majority of the executed and doubts on the gravity of the charges for some of them has the potential to fuel sectarian tensions which are already dominating the region”, she warned.
