15/03/2019 (Agence Europe) – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, whose membership of his Fidesz party in the Christian Democratic family will be decided on 20 March (see EUROPE 12214/3), gave a speech without frontal attacks on the European Commission and its President, Jean-Claude Juncker, or on billionaire George Soros, on Friday 15 March on the occasion of the Hungarian National Day commemorating the 1848 Hungarian Revolution. He delivered this speech to Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and leaders of the ruling Polish PiS party, with whom the Hungarian leader could become closer in the event of exclusion from the EPP (see EUROPE 12210/21). In his speech, Viktor Orbán reiterated his favourite themes on the preservation of Europe's Christian roots. He also promised a “new future, a new renaissance for Central Europe”, believing that when “Brussels attacks Poland, [...] they attack Central Europe and Hungary”. (SP)
