App stores need to be more transparent, according to several consumer authorities

14/03/2019 (Agence Europe)Apple and Google must adapt their application stores (AppStores) to inform consumers of the data privacy policies applied by each supplier, say several consumer authorities. “Consumers have a right to know what each application is doing with their data. Apple and Google application stores do not currently offer this option. That must change as soon as possible”, said Cateautje Hijmans van den Bergh, a member of the board of directors of the Dutch Consumer and Market Authority, which is behind the joint appeal launched on 12 March. An appeal that is supported, the organisation tells us, by other consumer authorities, including in Belgium, Latvia and Norway. “We are now waiting for Google and Apple to respond. There is no set timetable. But if they do not meet the requirements defined by the authorities, each consumer authority may impose individual sanctions”. (SPj)
