13/03/2019 (Agence Europe) – On 12 March, an EU spokesperson explained to EUROPE that the EU was taking “note of the decision of the President of the Republic not to stand in the next elections”. The announcement by Abdelaziz Bouteflika not to stand for a fifth term did not, however, calm down demonstrators in Algeria, who are concerned about the postponement of the elections. When asked about this postponement, the spokesperson simply stated that the Union was following “the development of any measures aimed at creating, as soon as possible, the necessary conditions for inclusive and transparent elections, allowing all citizens to express themselves in a free and peaceful manner and in accordance with democratic principles”. The EU stands ready to support Algeria on its path of reform, they added, recalling the importance of the partnership and the EU's commitment to continue strengthening relations with Algiers. (CG)
