27/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, called on Wednesday 27 February for the resumption of diplomatic contacts at the political level between India and Pakistan and the implementation of urgent measures by both sides, saying that this was "essential". "We expect both countries to exercise the utmost restraint now and to avoid any further escalation of the situation", she added in her statement. The confrontation along the 'Line of Control' between the two nuclear powers has intensified militarily in recent days following an attack (see EUROPE 12201) and, on 27 February, each country claimed to have shot down planes of the other. This intensification of tensions "could lead to serious and dangerous consequences for the two countries and the wider region", Ms Mogherini warned. (CG)
