The European Commission approved on Tuesday 26 February the acquisition by RWE of E.ON's renewable and nuclear power generation assets, in line with EU competition law rules.
Both companies, based in Germany, are active in the production and wholesale supply, as well as in the distribution and retail sale of electricity. The companies have decided to proceed with an assets swap, which will include the acquisition by RWE of a major part of E.ON's renewable and nuclear power generation assets.
Following the notification of the transaction on 22 January by the two companies, the Commission has carried out its examination and assessed its impact on the production and wholesale supply of electricity in Germany. The institution, after receiving feedback from public or private actors, considered that the acquisition in question should not hinder competition in the sector, nor have the effect of giving RWE the ability and incentives to influence market prices. It has therefore given the green light to the operation. (Original version in French by Lucas Tripoteau)
