12/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Monday, 11 February, at the commencement of the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani said he was “sorry” if his words – spoken the day before in a speech at a ceremony in Trieste in memory of the victims, particularly Italian victims, of the 1945 Foibe Massacres perpetrated by Tito’s Yugoslav supporters – have been misinterpreted. Mr Tajani had concluded his speech by saying: “Long live Trieste; long live Italian Istria; long live Italian Dalmatia!” “I referred to history and Italian Dalmatia, but this reference is not a territorial claim at all”, he said in defence, stressing the importance of reconciliation among Italians, Slovenes, and Croats. The Croatian Prime Minister called for clarification while his Slovenian counterpart, Marjan Šarec, denounced it as “unprecedented historical revisionism”. (MB)
