12/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – The trial of twelve Catalan separatists was widely commented by MEPs on Tuesday 12 February. Greens/EFA Co-President Ska Keller (Germany) called for a "fair" and "independent" trial, before denouncing once again the accusations of rebellion and sedition against the Catalans. For her, this trial is "a huge political failure" and called for the end of the provisional imprisonment of the politicians and leaders during the trial. Ahead of the plenary session, S&D Group Chairman Udo Bullman, welcomed Pedro Sánchez's (also Social Democrat) attempt to calm the debate, “without putting into question the political environment of the regions”. Esteban Gonzalez Pons (EPP, Spain) had harsh words against the Catalans, considering that their action constituted an illegal "attack" on the Spanish Constitution.
