07/02/2019 (Agence Europe) – The spokeswoman of the European External Action Service denounced on Wednesday 6 February the sentencing of Dennis Christensen, a Danish Jehovah's Witness, to 6 years in prison by a Russian court, calling for his immediate and unconditional release. He was arrested in 2017, during a peaceful meeting of Jehovah's Witnesses, and sentenced for "organising extremist activities". "No one should be imprisoned for peaceful acts of worship in the expression of their religious beliefs” the spokeswoman said in a statement, recalling that a number of criminal cases against Jehovah's Witnesses were ongoing in Russia. "Jehovah's Witnesses, like all other religious groups, must be able to peacefully enjoy freedom of assembly without interference, guaranteed by the Russian Constitution as well as by Russia's international commitments and international human rights standards", she said.
