11/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 11 January in Bucharest, Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker criticised those Member States which, "if they had implemented all our proposals” with regard to migration in a timely fashion, “would not be in the situation in which they find themselves". The European leader was reacting to the great difficulties some Member States had in agreeing on a solution to allow migrants rescued at sea to land in Malta during the Christmas period (see EUROPE 12168). He referred in particular to the Asylum package presented in 2016 by the Commission, which the Council has still not endorsed. Reacting to the comments made by his EPP counterpart, the Hungarian Viktor Orbán, who said on 10 January that he hoped to see the anti-migration parties win the European elections, Mr Juncker preferred to "check, because I cannot believe what I have read".
