The European Union "deeply regrets" that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is starting a second mandate “on the basis of non-democratic elections" held in May 2018, said the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, on Thursday 10 January(see EUROPE 12025).
Such a situation further removes the possibility of an exit from the political crisis as the socio-economic situation in the country continues to deteriorate, Mogherini said.
