European Parliament/Council negotiations on LIFE post-2020 programme have started in a good climate

Negotiations between the European Parliament and the Presidency of the Council of the EU, assisted by the European Commission, began on Wednesday 9 January on the priorities of the LIFE Environment / Climate Action Programme for the period 2021-2027, under the best auspices.

"The two sides not only presented their respective positions, but also took the temperature. The climate was constructive. No major political problems have been identified", according to a diplomatic source.

The positions of the Parliament and the Council on the priorities of this financial instrument specifically dedicated to the environment and climate action are not far apart, as both institutions are convinced of the usefulness and importance of this programme (see EUROPE 12164, 12157)

It was decided to work at the technical level to make maximum progress by the time of the next trilogue negotiation meeting, scheduled for 7 February.

The Presidency's objective is to complete the negotiations in February, excluding budgetary aspects, since negotiations between Parliament and the Council - which jointly constitute the budgetary authority - are under way on the EU's 2021-2027 multiannual financial framework. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
