10/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday, January 9, British Prime Minister Theresa May suffered another setback against the British Parliament. After stating her willingness to keep control in the event of Brexit without agreement (see EUROPE 12168), the latter asked her to draw up an alternative plan within three days if they rejected on Tuesday 15 January the agreement reached with the EU on an orderly withdrawal from the United Kingdom. This request, led by Conservative Dominic Grieve, was adopted by 308 votes in favour and 297 against, according to AFP. Another parliamentary amendment forces the government to accept new conditions to implement the 'safety net' for Northern Ireland. Ms May is still trying to get new assurances from the Twenty-Seven by Tuesday, with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker ready to provide further clarification to the agreement reached. The two leaders will talk on the phone again this week. (SP)
