04/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, met with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday 4 January. As she had indicated in mid-December at the end of the European Council (see EUROPE 12160), May began a 'tour' of visits and talks with several European leaders in preparation for the British Parliament's vote - around 15 January - on the agreement reached with the EU-Twenty-Seven on the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union (see EUROPE 12145). Objective: to obtain new guarantees, in particular on the issue of the Irish border. She had to inform Mr. Juncker of the situation, as he was "always ready to listen to her", said Mina Andreeva, the institution's spokesperson, on Friday. May has already spoken to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and to European Council President Donald Tusk. The British Parliament will resume its debates on Brexit the week of January 7. (SP)
