On Friday 21 December, the Council of the European Union added seven additional persons to the list of persons subject to EU restrictive measures due to the situation in Burma.
These persons, five of whom are members of the Myanmar Army (Tatmadaw) and two of the border guard police, are being punished for "serious human rights violations committed against the Rohingya population, ethnic minority villagers or civilians", according to the Council's statement. They are now subject to an asset freeze and a visa ban.
These sanctions follow the conclusions, inter alia, of the United Nations Human Rights Council's independent international fact-finding mission.
On 10 December, in its conclusions, the Foreign Affairs Council announced its "intention to make further designations to adopt restrictive measures against senior military officials and border police officers responsible for human rights violations" (see EUROPE 12156).
A total of 14 people are subject to sanctions for serious human rights violations in Burma (see EUROPE 12048). The country is also subject to an embargo on arms and equipment that can be used for internal repression (see EUROPE 12010). (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
