04/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – The far-right German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has set an ultimatum to reform the European Union according to its vision during the next mandate of the European Parliament. If this fails, the party believes that Germany leaving the EU ('Dexit') would be a “necessary step”, reported the Die Welt newspaper on Thursday 3 January. The deadline would start on the day of the European elections, on 26 May, until 2024. The first reform to be undertaken, according to the AfD, would be to transform the European Parliament into an “assembly” composed only of 100 deputies. The European election would then be abolished since the deputies would be elected by the national parliaments in proportion to the political forces that compose them. The party advocates the end of the euro and the EU Court of Justice, but also climate policies and those on gender equality, which it considers “superfluous”. (MF)
