17/12/2018 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission shares "the concerns raised in the European Parliament's report" on the rule of law in Hungary, particularly on the issue of fundamental rights, corruption, the treatment of Roma or the independence of the judiciary (see EUROPE 12094). Margaritis Schinas, the institution's spokesman, reacted on Monday 17 December to demonstrations in Hungary against the government of Viktor Orbán and against two new laws adopted by the Hungarian parliament. One of them provides that employers will be able to request up to 400 hours of overtime per year from their employees. On Sunday, 15,000 people demonstrated in Budapest to protest against another law that creates specific courts to deal with disputes related to public procurement or electoral processes. For the Commission, it is up to the General Affairs Council to decide on the follow-up to the Article 7 procedure on respect for the rule of law in Hungary (SP)
