EU announces new support of €122 million

On Monday 17 December, the European Commission announced the adoption of new projects for Syrian refugees and host communities in Jordan, Iraq and Turkey, for a total amount of €122 million.

Of this amount, €83 million will be allocated to Jordan to support access to education and basic health care, support sources of income through the development of cultural heritage and provide higher education opportunities for Syrian refugees and vulnerable communities.

€27 million will provide Syrian refugees and vulnerable communities in Turkey with livelihoods in the areas of agricultural development and micro-loans, as well as social protection and higher education.

€9.5 million will be used to strengthen essential maternal and child health care services and support livelihoods through the development of cultural heritage in Iraq.

The new aid comes from the EU's regional trust fund in response to the Syrian crisis. With this new package, €1.6 billion has already been mobilised under the Trust Fund.

In addition, at the meeting of the Fund's Board of Directors, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Estonia announced new contributions totalling €28.4 million. The Commission has pledged at least €220 million in 2019. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
