The spokeswoman of the European External Action Service welcomed on Monday 10 December the holding of early elections in Armenia the day before.
The coalition led by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pachinian won the early parliamentary elections with around 70% of the vote.
Quoting the International Elections Observation Mission, the spokeswoman said that the parliamentary elections had been “held with respect for fundamental freedoms and enjoyed broad public trust that needs to be preserved through further electoral reforms”. These first national elections after the political transition in spring 2018 “were important in terms of enhancing public trust towards the electoral process”, she said, adding that all stakeholders must continue concerted efforts towards further democratisation and modernisation of the country.
The chairwoman of the European Parliament delegation that observed the elections, Heidi Hautala (Greens/EFA, Finland), also made a positive assessment. “These elections were very well organised, with minimal irregularities and no pressure on voters”, she summarised. “We congratulate the authorities and participants in these elections and encourage the government and the National Assembly to further improve legislation for the upcoming elections”, she added.
“We look forward to working with the new democratically elected Parliament and the future government to deepen our political and economic relations”, added the EEAS spokesperson. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
