11/12/2018 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament has overwhelmingly called on the Member States to integrate Romania and Bulgaria into the Schengen free movement area as soon as possible, a non-binding request approved by 514 votes to 107 with 38 abstentions. In this resolution prepared by the Bulgarian socialist Serguei Stanishev, the Parliament also rejects the two-speed integration approach, starting with the opening of maritime and air borders and then land borders, which would pose a “number of risks” and have a negative impact on future enlargements. The Parliament also raises legal doubts about a two-step decision and stresses that Schengen should not be affected by deadlocks on asylum or other migration policies. The text also calls on the Interior Ministers to bring Croatia into Schengen as soon as the country has fulfilled all the criteria. (SP)
