Iran is waiting for mechanism promised by EU to help it sell its oil

Iran is waiting for the presentation of the mechanism promised by the EU to help it sell its oil and has no intention of renegotiating the 2015 nuclear agreement denounced by Washington, Iranian Vice-President Ali Akbar Salehi said in Brussels on Monday 26 November.

Technical work has been advancing, confirmed Climate and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete during a press briefing. Such a proposal could be presented in two weeks.

High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, announced on 26 September at the United Nations the EU's decision to create an entity to allow Iran to continue to sell oil after the entry into force of the second US sanctions package on 4 November.

The EU is considering a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) mechanism to allow trade with Iran to continue. “Nobody should have any doubt on the level of political ambition and determination by the Member States concerned, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, to make it operational quickly, the Commissioner said.

Coming to Brussels to participate in a two-day seminar on nuclear power, the Iranian vice-president said he was confident. The Europeans are having difficulties, but they are putting in place a mechanism that will facilitate financial transactions and oil sales, he said. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
