Europeans are concerned about risk of interference in European elections, according to a Eurobarometer survey

Online misinformation campaigns, data breaches and cyber attacks that could disrupt the May 2019 European elections are all risks that concern Europeans, according to a Eurobarometer survey entitled Democracy and Elections, published on Monday 26 November.

67% of respondents are concerned about the use of their personal data left online to target political messages, while 61% are concerned about the potential manipulation of elections due to cyber attacks and 59% about the influence of foreign actors and criminal groups on elections.

“This survey confirms that Europeans know that the upcoming elections will not be business as usual. They expect actions that will guarantee fair and secure elections,” commented the European Commissioner for Justice in a statement at Vĕra Jourová.

The survey, conducted at the homes of 27,474 respondents in the Twenty-Eight, also reveals Europeans' expectations for these elections and the factors that would encourage them to vote.

In particular, 31% of respondents would like to see more young candidates in the elections and 43% would like to receive more information about the European Union and its impact on their daily lives.
