European Parliament ready to negotiate with Council on management of small pelagic stocks in Adriatic Sea

On Tuesday 13 November, the European Parliament adopted its position on the management plan for small pelagic stocks caught in the Adriatic Sea (see EUROPE 12114)

The European Commission's proposal was amended by Parliament, which adopted (342 votes in favour, 295 against and 24 abstentions) the report by Mrs Ruža Tomašić (ECR, Croatia). Parliament now has its mandate to negotiate with the Council, which has not yet adopted its position.

Italy, Croatia and Slovenia fish for anchovies and sardines in this area. The management plan provides fishing opportunities for these fish. Catch limits for small pelagics should be fixed at the 2014 levels for 2019 and reduced by 4% annually, for each member state concerned, between 2020 and 2022. This 4% reduction would not apply if, in a previous year, the total catches for each member state are fewer (more than 2% lower) than in 2014.

It also sets out specific no-fishing periods with the aim of protecting young fish.

The fishing vessels most affected by the new rules could receive financial support from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) at special rates (15% above the existing ceiling). This derogation would be valid until 31 December 2020 and for a maximum period of nine months. The Commission will evaluate the plan three years after its entry into force. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
