27/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 27 September, the heads of EU delegations and EU member state missions, Norway and Switzerland called on the government of Bangladesh to continue consultations on the law on digital security, which was adopted on 19 September, and to pursue the commitments taken during the Universal Periodic Review in May, so as to ensure that this "Digital Security Act will be in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as the Constitution of Bangladesh". In a joint statement, the heads underlined their concern about several provisions of this law "which unduly restrict the freedom of expression and the freedom of the media and undermine judicial procedural guarantees". "In its current form the Act could be used to suppress and criminalise the legitimate exercise of these freedoms", they state. (CG)
