24/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Sunday 23 September in New York, the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk and the Austrian Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, held talks with the Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi, about holding an EU/Arab League summit in February 2019 in Cairo. One European source indicated on Monday 24 September that this summit would focus on “regional stability and mass migration as a consequence and factor resulting from instability”. At a bilateral level, the “exemplary” role of Egypt in the fight against human trafficking was acknowledged during the meeting, the same source added. Although the Egyptian authorities are not irreproachable on the theme of human rights, on Thursday 20 September the Salzburg summit approved closer co-operation with Egypt in an effort to stem migration flows to the EU (see EUROPE 12100).
