MEPs call for directive on deployment of alternative fuel infrastructure to be revised

MEPs at the European Parliament transport committee widely adopted (29 votes ‘for’, 0 “against” with 6 abstentions) the initiative report submitted by Ismail Ertug (S&D, Germany) calling on the European Commission to present a draft revision of the 2014and 14/94/EU directive on the deployment of alternative fuel infrastructure.

The vote on this initiative report follows the presentation of an action plan in this connection by the Commission as part of the second mobility package on 8 November last (see EUROPE 11896, 11900)

In a reference to the sporadic implementation of directive 2014/94/EU by the member states, only eight of them have fully respected their obligations, the Commission said that it is now seeking to support deployment of alternative fuel infrastructure on European Union territory. This will particularly involve a financial support package of up to €800 million.

Whilst positively welcoming this action plan, MEPs have now called for the text to be revised. It should be recalled that the Commission has already argued against this option (see EUROPE 11982)

MEPs also called for public transport to be focused on by way of promoting sustainable urban planning. (Original version in French by Lucas Tripoteau)
