14/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 14 September, the member states of the EU endorsed the proposal to authorise the European Commission to negotiate a new sustainable fisheries partnership agreement with the Republic of The Gambia (see EUROPE 12067). The decision will be formally adopted at a future Council meeting. An agreement, dating back to 1987, already exists between the EU and The Gambia. Implemented through three successive protocols, this agreement granted EU vessels access to The Gambia’s fishing zone until June 1996, when the last protocol of application expired. The agreement has lain inactive since that date. (LC)
