EU calls on all actors to participate in political solution

In the evening of Monday 3 September, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini called on all the legitimate Libyan actors to rally around the goals of a political solution, after violence started again in Tripoli over the weekend.

"Only a political process can bring a comprehensive, stable and sustainable solution to the crisis in Libya", she said in a press release published after her phone conversation with UN Special Envoy Ghassan Salamé.

Mogherini also called on the parties to cease hostilities immediately, saying that "violence begets violence and only brings more suffering to the Libyan people who deserve peace and security".  She also said the escalating violence in Tripoli is further undermining the already fragile situation in Libya.

"The European Union will continue to work with the United Nations and other international and regional partners to strengthen Libya's sovereign institutions, to help implement elections based on an adequate and solid constitutional framework, and create professional security forces under civilian control", Mogherini stated.  She also gave assurances that the EU would continue to support fully Salamé's work.  (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
