EU expects creation of independent and impartial mechanism for accountability

01/08/2018 (Agence Europe)High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini has reaffirmed the importance of creating an independent and impartial mechanism to ensure accountability for crimes against humanity in Burma/Myanmar.  On 31 May, Burma announced the creation of an independent commission of inquiry which could include an international personality.  "The EU will follow this issue very closely", Mogherini stated, when questioned by several MEPs about the measures to be adopted in the face of Burma's human rights violations.  The Council has already strengthened the arms embargo and imposed targeted sanctions on seven army, border guard and police officials (see EUROPE 12010, 12048).  Mogherini called on the countries and international actors concerned "to come into line with the EU's policy as regards military cooperation and possible targeted restrictive measures".  (CG, intern)
