Parliament vetoes any back-pedalling over commitments taken in draft joint agreement of December 2017

27/07/2018 (Agence Europe)On Friday 27 July, following a further week of negotiations (see EUROPE 12071), Parliament's steering group on 'Brexit' reiterated that the withdrawal agreement should include a viable safety net for the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and that there should be no back-pedalling from past commitments, in particular those taken in the joint report of 8 December 2017. Parliament considers that the successful finalisation of a withdrawal agreement that provides for the country's orderly withdrawal is a vital prerequisite for the negotiation of the future in-depth partnership. As regards the safety net, the Parliament group reiterates that the solution should remain specific to the case of Ireland and cannot establish the terms of the future relationship between the EU and the UK.
