18/07/2018 (Agence Europe) – The signing of the EU-Japan economic partnership agreement may have dominated the 25th bilateral summit in Tokyo on Tuesday 17 July (see EUROPE 12064), but tackling climate change was not ignored. In their final declaration, the two parties reaffirmed their “strong commitment to implement the Paris Agreement, through ambitious climate action”, in particular through reducing emissions while promoting innovation, climate finance, development of sustainable energy technologies, and improvement of energy efficiency so as to reach a global carbon-neutral economy over the course of the second half of the century. On the previous day, the EU and China adopted a joint declaration on climate and clean energy (see EUROPE 12063). (AN)
