In a statement on Tuesday 17 July, the EU-Montenegro stabilisation and association joint parliamentary committee calls on the Montenegrin opposition to return to the country's parliament.
Hailing the return of most of the opposition to the Skupština (the Montenegrin parliament), members of the European and Montenegrin parliaments urge the rest of the opposition to return as well. The statement underlines the need for "all political forces (...) to engage in a meaningful and inclusive political dialogue in the parliament in order to fulfil their parliamentary duties towards voters and to strengthen the parliamentary oversight over the executive".
The members of the EU-Montenegro stabilisation and association joint parliamentary committee also encourage the Montenegrin authorities "to further intensify work on the implementation of the fundamentals of the accession process: rule of law, fight against organised crime and corruption, integrity of the electoral process, media freedom, human rights, respect for and protection of minorities, economic governance and public administration reform".
The members say that "further and sustained efforts are needed towards increasing the independence, transparency, accountability and efficiency of all judicial institutions". They also urge all the political parties to take part in the process for a complete and non-exclusive reform of Montenegro's electoral legislation.
