12/07/2018 (Agence Europe) – On 10 July, the European Commission announced that €89.5 million in humanitarian aid has been released for vulnerable people in Somalia and Djibouti who have fallen victim to extreme weather conditions. Out of the aid package, €89 million will go to Somalia to reach people who have been displaced, and €500,000 will go to refugees in Djibouti. This assistance will target the urgent needs of the people – the treatment of malnutrition, water supply and health measures against epidemics, the protection of refugees in the camps and livestock protection. These vulnerable people are suffering "the devastating effects of two years of drought and the recent intense flooding (which) are taking their toll on the livelihood of millions of people", European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides stated. The Somalia Partnership Forum (Brussels, 16-17 July), which supports peace and democracy in the country, will be co-hosted by the EU. (AN)
