EUROPEAN COUNCIL / Digital

End of legislative cycle as new objective for putting single market into practice

The conclusions due for adoption by the European Council on Friday 29 June will briefly refer to the digital dossiers.

The final draft text calls on the EU to reach an agreement on the strategy proposals for a single digital market “before the end of the current legislative cycle” (as opposed to the previous summit stipulating the end of the year).

Twelve out of 29 initiatives are still on the co-legislators' table, including: the protection of private life on the Internet, copyright and the end to audiovisual geo-blocking, sales contracts and VAT for digital books.

The text also calls on the co-legislators to “swiftly” examine the most recent package on data and for the Commission to work with the member states on a “co-ordinated plan on artificial intelligence” on the basis of its recent communication (see EUROPE 12009). (Original version in French by Sophie Petitjean)
