19/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 June, the European Union condemned the execution on Monday of Mohammad Salas, a 51-year old bus driver who was sentenced to death on Monday 19 March for the murder of three police officers during a demonstration of the Gonabadi Dervishes religious group, a minority persecuted in Iran. His trial "raises serious questions about the respect for fundamental rights and due process", the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) stated, adding that Salas was reportedly forced to make a confession under torture and was denied access to the lawyer of his choice during the rushed legal proceedings. "It appears that key evidence which could have proven his innocence was also rejected", the EEAS spokesperson stated, also saying that the Supreme Court had dismissed an application for a judicial review of the case.
