14/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 13 June, the European Parliament group presidents Ska Keller and Philippe Lamberts (Greens/EFA), Manfred Weber (EPP), Udo Bullmann (S&D), Guy Verhofstadt (ALDE) and Gabi Zimmer (GUE/NGL) sent a letter to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Vice-President Frans Timmermans asking them to initiate an infringement procedure against the Polish legislation on the supreme court – which will result in some of the supreme court's judges retiring at the beginning of July because of the new Polish rules setting their age of departure at 65. The European Parliament group presidents want "to initiate an infringement procedure immediately, alongside the procedure provided for in Article 7, and to refer the Polish legislation on the supreme court to the European Court of Justice", the Greens/EFA group writes in a press release. It was the Greens/EFA Group that was at the origin of this initiative. (SP)
