14/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – European Council President Donald Tusk and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcome the agreement reached by Athens and Skopje aiming to give the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FRYOM) a definitive name – the Republic of North Macedonia (see EUROPE 12039). "We hope that this unique opportunity to relaunch the wider Western Balkan region's European and Euro-Atlantic integration will not be wasted", Tusk and Stoltenberg stated in a joint communiqué. The agreement on the name must now be ratified by the Greek and Macedonian parliaments, and approved by referendum in FYROM. On Wednesday, Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov, whose signature is required, said he would not sign an agreement that, in his view, grants too many concessions to Greece. (MB)
