05/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 4 June, the European GNSS agency (GSA) welcomed the release on to the market of the most recent Xiaomi Mi 8 smartphone due to its technical specificities. It is the first dual frequency GNSS smartphone that can obtain an accuracy level of up to 10cm or so as opposed to the current precision levels that have a margin of several metres. In its press release, the GSA explains that this dual frequency microchip therefore uses the frequency produced by the Galileo European satellite navigation program, which provides the specific frequencies used by these E5/L5 microchips in addition to the usual E1/L1. This is therefore good news for the European Commission, which is gearing up to present the regulation for space policy and the European space programs on Wednesday 6 June with an anticipated financial envelope worth €9.7 billion for Galileo (see EUROPE 12031).
